Sidekick FAQ

Q
I have a copy of NetworkLocation 3.1.4. Can I upgrade to Sidekick 4.0 for free?

A
Yes! We emailed existing NetworkLocation users with a free update code. Simply download and install Sidekick and youʼll have the option to import your old NL settings into Sidekick. If for some reason that doesnʼt work, just email support@oomphalot.com.

Q
What the heck is NetworkLocation?

A
Sidekick used to be called NetworkLocation. NL began as a few scripts to automate tedious tasks on our personal computers and eventually evolved into a full-fledged app. Over the years we continually improved the app, but decided that for version 4, we would re-vamp things completely. Sidekick 4.0 has much of the same functionality as NetworkLocation, but boasts a brand new (better) user experience.

Q
I've noticed that sometimes my Airport speakers cut in and out when Sidekick is running. Can you fix that?

A
There's only so much we can do; the rest is up to Apple to fix. There's a bug in CoreLocation that affects a small number of users. I've written a blog post that explains it thoroughly here: CoreLocation for Mac OS is Broken. The workaround for this is to disable Location Services in the Security pane of System Preferences, or to deny Sidekick the access to get your current location.

Q
I've noticed quite a bit of network traffic between my Mac and mac-services.apple.com while Sidekick is running. Can you fix that?

A
See the answer to the previous question. Same bug, similar issue. My bug report at Apple is still sitting in "Open" state.

Q
Do you offer educational discounts?

A
Yes we do. Simply email support from an educational email address and we'll send you a coupon code for the store.

Q
How can I backup my Sidekick settings?

A
Sidekick keeps its data in two locations. Basic preferences are stored in ~/Library/Preferences/com.oomphalot.Sidekick.plist, and the rest is in ~/Library/Application Support/Sidekick/ folder. Note that we don't officially support backing up your settings and moving them over to another Mac. Nothing bad should happen should you try doing that, but some actions might not work as expected. Some actions, such as "Change system location" link to "universally unique identifiers" on your system which will be different on the other Mac. In those cases you'll need to delete and read those actions manually. Most actions should transfer just fine though.

Q
Can Sidekick control my VPN connections?

A
Sidekick does not have any actions to control OS X's VPN connections. However, we provide an applescript under the Extras section which should work with very few modifications.

Q
I'd like to control MobileMe using Sidekick.

A
That's not a question, now is it? Unfortunately, we have yet to find any way of controlling this. We hope that future versions of OS X will allow us to make changes to this app's configurations.
